Activities on Maui

People often ask us about things to do once on the island.  Here is a small, but helpful list of activities people enjoy.  For more specifics - there are brochures and maps at your condo just outside the elevators on the ground floor.  Comments and suggestions are welcome.  Aloha!

Need a baby sitter while you take an excursion?  Try MauiPlayCare in Kihei (808-891-2273)

Note:  when using a local phone on Maui you do not dial the area code (808).

Sightseeing - scenic drives                                                                                 Back to Top

Iao Valley (near Wailuku)

Haleakala volcano summit

Haleakala volcano upcountry (Kula to Keokea to Ulupalakua)

Road to Hana and the many water falls (fill up on gas, leave early, pack snacks and drinks)

Northwest shore (from Kapalua to Wailuku / Kahului)

Old lava flow (at LaPerouse Bay)

The island in general !  Beautiful fields of sugar cane and pineapple, exotic trees & flowers.

Things to See                                                                                                          Back to Top

Windsurfers at Ho'okipa Beach (north side just east of Kahalui), at Kanaha Beach Park (north side by Kahalui airport), or up and down the beaches in Kihei.

Surfers near Ho'okipa Beach.

Brilliant sunsets from your lanai (patio), from the rooftop sundeck (7th floor) or from the beach in front of your condo.

Sunrise over Haleakala volcano - you have to be up very early to get to the top in time!   (Do this when you first get to Maui).  Wear something warm, it's over 10,000 feet in elevation and gets cold!.

The crater and visitor center on top of Haleakala volcano.

From the summit of Haleakala view the Big Island, and the islands of Molokai, Lanai, Molokini and Kaho'olawe.

Fantastic ocean water geyser and spray at Nakalele Point (on northwest shore).

Things to Do                                                                                                            Back to Top

Maui Swap Meet in Kahului on Saturday morning.  You'll love it!  Locals sell trinkets, souvenirs, island clothes, fruits/vegetables, local musicians selling their CD's, local artists selling their paintings, and the list goes on . . .

Enjoy the Maui Ocean Center in Ma'alea.  Incredible sea creatures.

Take a scenic hike on the Waihe'e Ridge Trail (just north of Iao Valley on the north side).  A very scenic hike, you'll be climbing about 1500 feet into the West Maui Mountains, to an altitude of about 2600 feet.  Leave early morning to try to avoid cloud cover.  The trail  opens at 7am.  Go to Kahului and take highway 340 north (towards northwest Maui).  Just under four miles after mile marker 3 take a left on the road that says to Maluhia Boys Scout Camp.  About a mile later you'll be at the trailhead on your left.  The trail starts with a steep climb on a cement road, then a dirt path on the left leads you up a fairly easy hike into forests and ridges.  It's a leisurely walk in some areas, but steep terrain in others.  Views looking down on Maui and the north shore are breath-taking .  The trail goes about 2.5 miles if you go all the way.  About a half mile from the beginning of the trail you'll see two huge water falls, the Makamaka'ole Falls.  The water falls, the sights, walking on top of mountain ridges, the valleys and ocean below will reward your efforts many times over.  Wear hiking boots and take plenty water to drink.  Be careful since the terrain can get slippery when wet.  This trail will be a two or three hour hike round trip if you take your time and go all the way.  You could go part the way and turn around if you prefer.  It's well worth it!  We can't wait to go again!

Sunbath and swim on the beach right in front of you condo (Kamaole Beach I), or at the other beaches in walking distance (Kamaole Beach II & Kamaole Beach III), or a short drive away (Makena Beach).

Snorkel or scuba dive from the beach in front of your condo, or take an excursion with a guide and meet people from all over the world.  There are boats that take you to Molokini for snorkeling and fun.  Two local snorkel shops are a short walk from your condo for gear rental and lessons.

Go sailing or take sailing excursions.

Take a sunset cruise.

Go deep sea fishing (the Kihei Boat Ramp is just a couple minutes drive south).

Go surfing or windsurfing - take lessons from island experts.

Whale watch (winter months), be entertained and amazed by the spinner dolphins, or just enjoy the boat ride with the Pacific Whale Foundation.  It supports a great cause as well.  This is one of our favorites.

Enjoy a Hawaiian luau!  We really like the luau at the Wailea Mariott Hotel (about 5 minute drive from your condo).  Get tickets in advance and show up early for the best seating.  (808-874-7831)

Star Gazers Maui - after enjoying a Haleakala sunset, view the heavens through a computerized telescope from 10,000 feet!  (808-281-9158)

Take the sunrise excursion & bicycle ride down Haleakala (leaves very early and dress to stay warm).

Wine tasting at Tedeschi Winery (Haleakala upcountry in Ulupalakua). Have you ever heard of pineapple wine?

Take a plantation tour.

Go horseback riding.

Play tennis or golf in any of several nearby facilities.

Go shopping in many nearby stores.  Shop till you drop, then crawl, in historic Lahaina (West Maui).

Taste wonderful cuisines from many nearby restaurants.

Enjoy a relaxing stroll on the beach in front of your condo.

But most of all - relax on your lanai while you watch waves cut patterns in the sand on the beach - hear the rhythm of the waves pounding the shoreline - take in a deep breath of warm Pacific air  - and dream you could stay here forever . . .
